Kyle Stumpf is a 29 year old caucus-goer from Dubuque county with an intellectual disability. Kyle and his father Bill had a chaotic experience when they caucused in 2016. Kyle’s father expressed that a lot of the caucus staffers were condescending to Kyle, expressing their shock at Kyle’s attendance.
“Kyle is there to caucus, he’s a participant,” Bill said. “I hope they see people with disabilities as players.”
Lack of understanding has been a theme in the disability community, as community members often encounter staff who are unprepared during the elections and caucuses.
Because of experiences like Kyle’s, Disability Rights Iowa has worked to meet with both major political parties to make the February 3, 2020 caucuses accessible. It is important that the disability community is involved in a continual effort for access.
